Giving Can Be Selfish

Recently, I read an article criticizing a potato chip company for putting a breast cancer pink ribbon on their bags. They were accused of using the ribbon for furthering their own brand rather than for the cause itself. All I could think to myself was “so what”.  If a donor receives monetary gain while supporting a cause, then everyone wins.

As founder of the prostate cancer awareness organization, ProstAware, I hope that our supporters reap rewards – whether monetary or intangible. Non-profit organizations want to provide any or all of the following benefits:

  • Recognition
  • Personal satisfaction
  • Tangible assets
  • Gifts of monetary value
  • Enhanced profitability
  • Entertainment
  • Education and awareness
